Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to potential hazards of fires and/or explosions due to dust collection system not being designed, constructed, and maintained according to established safety and health standards. a. Shop Area - Employees working in areas served by the dust collection system were exposed to fire and/or explosion hazards due to the dust collection system not being designed, constructed, and maintained properly. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to design, construct, and maintain the dust collection system according to established safety and health standards. ABATEMENT NOTE: See "NFPA 664 Standard for the Prevention of Fires and Explosions in Wood Processing and Woodworking Facilities" for guidelines.
