Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to:
a) Employee(s) were exposed to the hazard of an approximate ten foot
fall to a concrete floor while standing on the elevated forks of the
Hyster-30 Industrial Truck during maintenance work at the west end of
the Casting Room.
A feasible and acceptable abatement method among others to correct this
hazard is to:
1) Provide a safety platform capable of being securely attached to the
lifting carriage and/or forks before it is elevated.
2) Prohibit the movement of fork lift trucks while employee(s) are
elevated on the work platform.
3) Instruct and train all fork lift operators to observe the safety
rules.
