SECTION 5(A)(1) OF THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AN HEALTH ACT OF 1970: THE EMPLOYER DID NOT FURNISH EMPLOYMENT AND A PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT WHICH WERE FREE FROM RECOGNIZED HAZARDS THAT WERE CAUSING OR LIKELY TO CAUSE DEATH OR SERIOUS PHYSICAL HARM TO EMPLOYEES IN THAT EMPLOYEES WERE EXPOSED TO THE HAZARD OF BEING STRUCK AND/OR CRUSHED: EMPLOYEES WERE EXPOSED TO SEVERE INJURY AND DEATH BY FALLING VEHICLE(S) AND LIFT(S) WHILE PERFORMING VEHICLE REPAIR UNDER A RAISED VEHICLE AND LIFT (MODEL EC-100, WEAVER TWIN POST LIFT). AMONG OTHER METHODS, TWO FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHODS TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD ARE: 1) ESTABLISH PROCEDURES AND ENFORCE UTILITZATION OF PORTABLE JACK STANDS OR OTHER POSITIVE SUPPORT MECHANISM UNDER THE LIFT'S FRAME WHICH MEETS THE STRENGTH FACTOR OR NOT LESS THAN THREE TIMES THE RATED LOAD CAPACITY OF THE LIFT; 2) INSTALL AN AUTOMOTIVE LIFT EQUIPPED WITH AN AUTOMATIC LOCK DEVICE DESIGNED WITH A STRENGTH FACTOR OF NOT LESS THAN THREE, BASED ON THE RATED LOAD CAPACITY OF THE LIFT. A LIFT MEETING THIS CRITERIA IS READILY AVAILABLE FROM MANUFACTURERS OF AUTOMOTIVE LIFT EQUIPMENT.
