Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to
serious injury while working below multiple structural steel members,
suspended from the hook of the crane, and "Christmas Tree" fashion on or
about 1-12-89.
One feasible and useful method of abatement, among other methods, is to
lift one item per lift and not multiple loads:
JOB SITE - On or about 1-12-89, employees were rigging and
connecting random pieces of structrual steel beams (Christmas
treeing). The employees were exposed to overhead hazards when
working underneath the suspended steel beams.
