Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) On or about 9/28/89 and at times prior to, deli employees were exposed to serious bodily harm from severe cuts to the fingers while cleaning a Globe Gravity feed meat slicer, model 500, serial number 527115, in that no lockout procedure had been enforced and employees were allowed to clean the slicer while it was operating. One feasible method of abatement among others would be to enforce the established written procedure for cleaning slicers, the first step of which is to unplug the slicer before removing the guards.
