General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) On or about September 4, 1987, employees were exposed to hazard of falling or collapsing steel beams approximately 37 feet high used in construction of roof for warehouse "B". The 40 foot span bar joists on 5 foot centers were not properly bridged or all welded at ends in precaust tilt up concrete walls. Bundles of floor decking plus employees walking on steel constituted loads on unsecured bar joists. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to properly bridge and weld all bar joists before any construction load of any type is placed on them.
