Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The

employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to:
On 4/20/88 an employee performing repair work on a launder located
at Bay 4 in the Maintenance Shop used a 1 ton hoist with a clamping
device to lift and turn the launder which weighed approximately 4500
lbs. resulting in the release of the load and exposed employee to
possible injuries to hands and/or feet.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard would be:
1) Preplan lift(s) by determining weights of objects to be lifted and
equipment to be used.
2) Assure the lift(s) do not exceed the posted capacity of the
equipment.
3) Involved employees are to be trained in relation to items 1 and 2
above.
