Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to:
a) The hazard of being struck by falling trusses at Building No. 8 of
4950 SW 72nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33155: in that adequate and continuous
lateral bracing and proper diagonal bracing was not used to prevent
toppling and dominoing of erected trusses. Bracing through chords
laterally and cross bracing was not provided to ensure that trusses
were esecure in a straight and plumb position. Some trusses exhibited
evidence of buckling on or about October 3, 1986.
Among other methods one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard is to install bracing in accordance with the Truss
Plate Institute. BWI-76. Bracing Wood Trusses Commentary and
Recommendations.
