Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The

employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which
were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause
death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were
exposed to incompatible storage which would result in a release of
hydrogen cyanide gas:
(a) Plating Room, southeast wall shelf: a cardboard vessel
containing silver cyanide was stored adjacent to a glass
bottle of nitric acid. Accidental mixing of the silver
cyanide and the nitric acid would result in the release of
hydrogen cyanide gas and possible cyanide poisoning of
exposed employees.
(b) Plating Room, south diked area: Copper cyanide and
potassium cyanide were stored in a concrete diked area near
fluorboric acid containers. Accidental mixture of the
cyanides and the acids would result in the release of hydrog-
en cyanide gas and possible cyanide poisoning of exposed
employees.
(c) Plating Room, south entrance: Barrels containing
residual amounts of potassium cyanide were stored adjacent
to barrels containing residual amounts of fluorboric acid.
Accidental mixture of the potassium cyanide and the fluoro-
boric acid would result in the release of hydrogen cyanide
gas and possible poisoning of exposed employees.
(d) Plating Room, north wall: A cardboard barrel containing
copper cyanide was stored underneath the eye wash station.
Accidental, uncontrolled mixture of water and copper cyanide
could result in the release of hydrogen cyanide gas and
possible cyanide poisoning of exposed employees.
(e) Plating Room, northeast corner: A barrel containing
sodium cyanide was stored underneath a barrel containing
waste silver plating tank solution. Accidental, uncontrolled
mixture of water and copper cyanide could result in the
release of hydrogen cyanide gas and possible cyanide poison-
ing of exposed employees.
One feasible and acceptable abatement method, among others, to correct
the hazards is to physically separate the cyanides from acids and other
liquids by placing the cyanides in a separate storage room to prevent
accidental contact with acids and other liquids in the event of con-
tainer failure, leakage or spillage.
