Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: The hazard of contact with molten iron while charging the ductile iron furnace with porous pig iron ingots containing entrapped water which caused or is likely to cause steam explosions in the furnace and splash molten metal onto employees working at the furnace area. One feasible and acceptable method to correct the hazard among other methods is to prevent pig iron ingots containing moisture from being put into the molten batch by inspecting and rejecting wet ingots and/or preheating the ingots for a long enough period of time at the necessary required heat to ensure the elimination of all moisture before charging the ingots into the furnace.
