Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of crane failure caused by side pulls during the hoisting of concrete piles: a) Choptank River Bridge, Cape Fear Floating Rig - Placement of concrete pilings (44 ton, 88 long) in Choptank River on 10/2/82. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to locate materials where they are clear of obstruction and directly hoisted by the material hoisting by the material hoisting equipment.

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of falling from a suspended load: a) Choptank River Bridge, Newport News Floating Rig - Employees exposed to a fall of 48" while riding the load (15" wide steel beam) on 10/2/85. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is the use of personnel hoising equipment that complies with OSHA standards.
