Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to
hazards of falling loads due to failure of chains or chain hoists. On
August 7, 1987, employees were exposed to overhead loads, suspended by
chain choists which had not been given daily inspections.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this
hazard is to require daily inspections of chain hoist components as
required by the manufacturer and American National Standards Institute
B30.16-1973 par. 16-2.2.1.2(e).
