Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which
were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause
death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were
exposed to:
Employees working in the track shoe conveyor room where track
shoes are placed on hooks for transport to a dip tank were
exposed to musculoskeletal injuries during lifting operations
of track shoes when the load, frequency, and duration of the
lifting tasks created a significant probability of injury.
Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable abatement method
to correct this hazard is:
Maximize use of the mechanical hoist to lift track shoes. In
addition, develop a back injury prevention program including
training, methods to identify workers at risk of injury and
physical conditioning of workers with existing back injury.
DISCLAIMER:

suggested by OSHA;
b. The methods explained are general and may not be effective
in all cases; and
c. The employer is responsible for selecting and carrying out
an effective abatement method.

Employees working in the track shoe conveyor room, where steel
tractor shoes are dipped in acrylic alkyd yellow paint, used
gasoline as a solvent to remove paint from their skin.
Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods
to correct this hazard are:
1. Provide adequate protective equipment to prevent skin
contact with paint, thus eliminating the need for a cleaning
solvent.
2. Use commercially available hand cleaners, such as 3M "Paint
Buster", to remove paint resulting from accidental skin contact.
