General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of lung and eye damage due to accidental ammonia leaks: a) Through the wall opening between the ammonia compressor room and the building passageway on the other side of the wall. b) The fan wall opening between the amonia compressor room and the ammonia pump room. c) The wall fan opening between the ammonia compressor room and the air compressor room. d) The open entrance from the building passageway into the ammonia pump room where there is not a tight fitting door. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement to correct this hazard is to put the ammonia compressor room and the ammonia pump room into compliance with the ammonia machinery room requirements of ANSI/ASHRAE 15-1978 Safety Code for Mechanical Refrigeration, section 7. 4 and 11.13, which specify that refrigerant machinery rooms be provided with tight fitting doors and have no partitions or openings that will permit the passage of escaping refrigerant to other parts of the building.
