Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to:
...the hazard of being struck by moving vehicles. On October 21, 1988
around the A furnace slag pit, no designated walkway, separated a
safe distance from the roadway, was provided for pedestrian traffic
passing through this area where vehicles engaged in removing and
hauling slag utilizing heavy equipment with a restricted operator's
view were operated.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of abatement
is the establishment of a designated walkway convenient to the
employee's need in the area and separated a safe distance from the slag
pit operations.
