Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did nto furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to:
a) Employees exposed to the hazard of explosion when molten slag was
emptied into a pit containing excessive moisture.
One feasible and acceptable method among others is to develop a
procedure requiring employees to inspect the area where the slag is
dumped to assure that it is dry.
In addition to this, assure that this area is maintained at an
elevation level above the adjacent roadway, reducing the likelihood
of water run off accumulating into the slag dumping area.
