General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) Hazard to employees of being struck or crushed by a faulty automobile lift that did not have the following: 1. Was not periodically inspected. 2. Rated load capacity not permanentyl marked. 3. No operating instructions posted. 4. Trapped air in the cylinders causes erratic, unsafe operation of the lift. 5. Oil leaks out of the cylinders and causes the lift to drop 2 to 3 ft. at a time. The rotating lift manufactured by Dover Corp., model JG183A is operated by the mechanics in the Honda Service Department. Among other methods, one feasable and acceptable abatement method to correct these hazards is: (1) Inspect lift every 6 months. (2) Permanently mark "rated load capacity" on lift. (3) Post operating instructions. (4) Use a method of venting entrapped air from each cylinder. (5) Repair cylinders and lines to preent fluid from leaking from them. (6) Comply with American National Standard B153.1.
