Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) For employees operating the Setco stand grinder #1 with a 30-inch diameter grinding wheel and exposed to the potential hazard of being struck by breaking or disintegrating wheel fragments due to the lack of a self-closing guard on the grinder. (b) For employees operating the Setco stand grinder #2 with a 30-inch diameter grinding wheel and exposed to the potential hazard of being struck by breaking or disintegrating wheel fragments due to the lack of a self-closing guard on the grinder. (c) For employees operating the Setco stand grinder #3 with a 30-inch diameter grinding wheel and exposed to the potential hazard of being struck by breaking or disintegrating wheel fragments due to the lack of a self-closing guard on the grinder. (d) For employees operating the Setco stand grinder #4 with a 30-inch diameter grinding wheel and exposed to the potential hazard of being struck by breaking or disintegrating wheel fragments due to the lack of a self-closing guard on the grinder. (e) For employees operating the Setco stand grinder #5 with a 30-inch diameter grinding wheel and exposed to the potential hazard of being struck by breaking or disintegrating wheel fragments due to the lack of a self-closing guard on the grinder. (f) For employees operating the Setco stand grinder #6 with a 30-inch diameter grinding wheel and exposed to the potential hazard of being struck by breaking or disintegrating wheel fragments due to the lack of a self-closing guard on the grinder. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be to equip stand grinders with self-closing guards as required by ANSI B7.1-1988.
