Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the unexpected release of machinery and/or equipment due to failure of a crane running rope: TIRE CHANGING AREA/BAY: THE RUNNING ROPE ON THE DWIGHT FOOTE FIVE TON UNDERHUNG BRIDGE CRANE HAD FOUR BROKEN WIRES IN ONE STRAND IN ONE LAY. BROKEN WIRES WERE ALSO OBSERVED IN ANOTHER LAY OF THE ROPE. THE COMPANY DID NOT PROVIDE REGULAR INSPECTIONS OF THE CRANE COMPONENTS. ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO CORRECT THE HAZARD, AMONG OTHERS, IS TO: 1.DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT A SCHEDULE OF REGULAR, DOCUMENTED INSPECTIONS OF THE CRANE TO BE PERFORMED BY A QUALIFIED PERSON. THE INSPECTION PROGRAM SHOULD INCLUDE, AT A MINIMUM, MONTHLY WIRE ROPE INSPECTIONS AND A COMPREHENSIVE ANNUAL INSPECTION. 2.PERFORM MAINTENANCE/REPLACEMENT AS INDICATED BY THE INSPECTION PROGRAM. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION IS NOT REQUIREDATION
