Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fire and explosion hazards from freely dispersed aluminum dust and accumulated aluminum dust in the work area: MISCELLANEOUS METALS DIVISION LOCATED AT 55 CORNEAU WAY, SOUTH WINDSOR, CONNECTICUT: FABRICATION AREA: ALUMINUM PIPE WAS POLISHED ON THE BADER BELT SANDER AND THE RAMCO WIDE BELT SANDER WITHOUT THE USE OF AN APPROVED DUST COLLECTION SYSTEM. ALUMINUM DUST WAS ALLOWED TO DISPERSE IN THE AIR AND ACCUMULATE ON MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT IN THE WORK AREA. ONE FEASIBLE AND USEFUL METHOD TO CONTROL THE HAZARD, AMONG OTHERS, IS TO: 1.INSTALL A DEDICATED, PROPERLY MAINTAINED DUST COLLECTION SYSTEM FOR ALUMINUM DUST ON ALL MACHINES THAT GENERATE DUST. NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION STANDARD NUMBER 65 PROVIDES DESIGN REQUIREMENTS. 2.PRACTICE GOOD HOUSEKEEPING IN THE WORK AREA. 3.PROHIBIT SMOKING IN THE WORK AREA.
