Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to trip/fall hazards due to insufficient illumination in the work area: a) Shunt Track Near L.B. Smith Screener - night shift employees operating the shunt car while uncoupling and moving cars are exposed to trips/falls and related hazards since the quality and quanitity of illumination is poor or nonexistent in some work areas. Illumination reading indicated from 00.2 to 00.3 footcandles of lighting in certain shunt track areas out of range of the lighting provided by the lamps on the shunt car which provided illimination readings of 14.0 footcandles. Observed 5/6/92 ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and useful means of abatement to correct the hazard would be to provide levels of illumination engineering society, ANSI A 11.1.
