Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees who were working at the loading dock area were subject to being struck by materials and/ or equipment that could fall from the building during overhead window rennovation operations. a) Jon Wanamaker, 1300 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 13th Street Side, Ground Level, Column 10-11 loading Dock area - employees performing construction work in the loading dock area were exposed to overhead material handling hazards, including hoisting and installation of steel frame windows. A twenty-four inch gap between the external building wall and existing overhead scaffold planking did not provide adequate protection for employees below in case of falling materials. Observed 7/26/89. ABATEMENT NOTE: A feasible method of abatement would be to install the scaffold type structure adjoining the building to eliminate the overhead unprotected open space/gap between the scaffold planks and the exterior surface of the building.

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to burns and/or smoke inhalation in the event of a fire or smilar emergency evacuation situation: a) John wanamaker, 1300 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA Sub-basement- directional exit signs to the exit system (fire tower) for use during an emergency or fire were not provided in the remote and isolated work areas of the catacomb like sub-basement work area. The way to the firetower exits must be explicit to prevent possible employee burns or smoke inhalation in case a fire or emergency. Observed 10/23/89. ABATEMENT NOTE: A feasible method of abatement should be to install specific directional signs which clearly demonstrate accessibility routes to emergency exit fire towers in all sub-basement areas subject to rennovation work.
