Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to death by crushing due to being required to work beneath hydraulic automotive lifts, that were not regularly maintained to ensure their continued safe operation. %% a) Bay #1 - both safety catches failed to function when the hydraulic lift was in the raised position. Observed 8/23/91 b) Bay #3 - the safety locking device did not engage when hydraulic lift was in the raised position. Observed 8/23/91 c) Bay #4 - the safety catch on the left side of the hydraulic was missing. Observed 8/23/91 d) Bay #5 - the safety catch on both sides of the hydraulic lift was missing. Observed 8/23/91 e) Bay #6 - The hydrolic lift did not raise high enough for the safety catches to engage. Observed 8/23/91 f) Bay #7 - the hydraulic lift will not raise high emough to allow the safety catches to engage. Obsrved 8/23/91 g) Bay #8 - the safety catch on the left side of the hydraulic lift didn't engage when lift was in raised position. The catch on the right side was missing. observed 8/23/91 h) Bay #9 - the safety catch on the hydraulic lift did not engage when lift was in the raised position. Observed 8/23/91. %% ABATEMENT NOTE: A feasable method to abate the condition would be to require daily inspections of the lifts in order to maintain and care for the lifts to ensure their continued safe operation in accordance with ANSI B153.1 - 1990 section 7.1.2
