Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to
the possibility of injection of paint hypodermically into their body:
a) Southern Lehigh High School, Center Valley, PA - Employee was using
a Grayco airless spray system and the spray painting gun was not
provided with a tip guard to serve as a tactual or reminder to the
operator that a body part is near the high pressure paint stream,
October 25, 1989.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this
hazard is to install a tip guard on the spray gun when performing
airless spray painting.
