Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to
being struck or crushed on car lifts:

a) Vehicle Repair Area, Bay 8:  The lift components of
hydraulic electric car lift, manufactured by Globe Hoist Co.,
Model FS10BS, Serial Number 120206 were not in safe operating
condition as the automatic mechanical safety latch was
rusted and clogged with dirt so as to permit its free
functioning as a safety device, on or about October 25, 1991.

b) Vehicle repair area, Bay 11:  The lift components of
hydraulic electric car lift, manufactured by the Automatic
Hoist Company, Model FS27, Serial Number 9558 were not in
safe operating condition as the automatic mechanical safety
latch was rusted and clogged with dirt so as not to permit
its free funcitoning as a safety device, on or about October
25, 1991.

Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard is to check the functioning of these safety devices
each time the hoist is used and to clean and lubricate them as needed
to insure proper functioning.
