Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death of serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a fall hazard: a.) salem, virginia; v.a. medical center, bldg. 143, west side, e section roof. Employees performing work on the parapet (approxim ately 16 inches high) were exposed to a potential fall of approxima tely 20 feet to the ground below. An acceptable abatement method is to wear safety belts with lanyard s secured.
