Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of exposure to non-ionizing radiation resulting in severe burns of the eyes and skin: a) Production Area, Fanuc Laser Model C1000, Class IV Laser A written Standard Operating Procedure was not developed and implemented to insure that operators and nearby employees are not exposed to non-ionizing radiation generated by the lazer and a laser safety officer was not appointed to insure that all laser operations are performed in compliance with the laser safety guidelines of ANSI Z136.1, on or about 10/9/92. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to utilize the directions in the "Guidelines for Laser Safety and Hazard Assessment", OSHA Pub 8-1.7, and the American National Standard for the safe use of Lasers, ANSI Z136.1, for the development of a Standard Operating Procedure for Class IV Laser and that Appointment of a Laser Safety Officer.
