Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees sorting and washing linens from hospitals and funeral homes had reasonably anticipated exposure to and contraction of the Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and/or Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) through possible direct contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials. Feasible abatement methods for reducing this hazard include: a. Establish a training program on bloodborne pathogens. The training material shall be appropriate to the educational level and language of the employees. The training shall include epidemiology and transmission of the bloodborne diseases and benefits of the Hepatitis B vaccine. b. Provide the Hepatitis B vaccine, free of charge, to all em- ployees who have occupational exposure. c. Train employees to report exposure incidents, such as needle- sticks, and provide medical evaluation and follow-up upon receipt of an exposure incident. d. Provide puncture resistant containers for disposal of sharps.
