What this inspection record means

OSHA opens inspections for many reasons — routine scheduling under a national or local emphasis program, an employee complaint or referral, or a follow-up after a reported injury. Opening or conducting an inspection is not itself an allegation or a finding that this employer broke any rule; any findings appear as the citations listed below, and citations can be contested, reduced, or withdrawn.

Section 5(a)(1)of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
%%
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to:
Crim's Corner Plaza, 3212 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown, OH., on 5/31/90,
an employee was exposed to the hazards of broken bones, severe cuts,
and or death while installing 58" long wood trusses on top of masonry
bearing walls. The noted hazards were created by an inadequate number
of lateral bracing and the lack to top cord diagonal bracing and a
insufficient number of nails in the braces.
The hazards can be abated by, but not limited to, a program including
the following criteria:
1. Ensure that lateral bracing begins within 6" of the ridge and
does not exceed 10' intervals.
2. Install top cord diagonal bracing between the lateral bracing
and repeat the diagonal bracing every 20'.
3. Ensure that two 16 d nails are nailed to every truss member where
bracing is required.
4. Install all manufacturers recommended bracing prior to landing any
imposed loads on the trusses.
5. Do not repair damaged trusses without the manufacturer's instruc-
tions and/or certification.
6. Enforce and document the above procedures.
