SECTION 5(A)(1) OF THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ACT OF 1970: THE EMPLOYER DID NOT FURNISH EMPLOYMENT AND A PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT WHICH WERE FREE FROM RECOGNIZED HAZARDS THAT WERE CAUSING OR LIKELY TO CAUSE PERMANENT CRIPPLING, LOSS OF FUNCTION AND SERIOUS INJURY TO EMPLOYEES IN THAT THE FOLLOWING EMPLOYEES WERE EXPOSED TO WORK CONDITIONS WHICH INCREASED THE POSSIBILITY OF BACK INJURIES: A) NURSING ASSISTANTS, RESPONSIBLE FOR MOST RESIDENT PATIENT TRANSFER WERE SUBJECT TO FREQUENT AND SEVERE BACK INJURIES. THE RESULTS OF WORKER EXPOSURES TO ERGONOMIC STRESSES WHILE PERFORMING TASKS WERE SHOWN BY A RECORDED HISTORY OF WORKER LOST TIME AND SYMPTOMS OF PAIN IN THE BACK, NECK AND SHOULDERS. THE EMPLOYER DID NOT PERFORM FORM ERGONOMIC EVALUATIONS TO IDENTIFY DANGEROUS WORK SITUTATIONS AND WORK PRACTICES. THE WORKPLACE ERGONOMICS HAZARDS AS DEMONSTRATED BY THESE BACK INJURIES CAN BE CONTROLLED AND ERGONOMIC STRESORS REDUCED BY A PROGRAM INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING: OVERALL PROGRAM 1) WORKER TRAINING AND INFORMATION- THE KEY TO HELPING WORKERS PROTECT THEMSELVES FROM ERGONOMIC INJURY AND DISEASE IS INFORMATION. ESTABLISH AN EDUCATION PROGRAM TO INFORM WORKERS ABOUT LIFTING-RELATED STRESSES, POSTURE-RELATED STRESSES, AND BACK INJURY CONDITIONS. THE PROGRAM SHOULD BE ADDRESSED TO BOTH NEW WORKERS, INJURED WORKERS, AND TO LONG-TERM WORKERS WHO NEED TO MAINTAIN AND APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE. WAYS TO EDUCATE WORKERS ARE BY: A) USING AN ADDITIONAL SMALL CLASSROOM STUDY GROUP, AND B) USING A SELF-TEACHING VIDEO TAPE.
