Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to:
The level of illumination was inadequate on top of the coke ovens
and on the push and coke side of the coke ovens in that employees
were exposed to:
Falls, resulting in possible fractures and/or severe burns from
contact with hot surfaces, while working on top of coke ovens and
on the push and coke side of the coke ovens due to inadequate
illumination during night time work hours in several areas where
employees were working, illuminations was measured to be less than
two foot candles.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard is to increase the minimum levels of illumination
for all areas/activities on the coke ovens to at least 20 foot candles,
as stipulated by ANSI/IES RP7-1983, Practice for Industrial Lighting.
