Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to:
Average readings of 132 mw/cm2 at the side of their heads on the #4
Thermation press for a period of .1 hour which is 124 times the
standard. The Collocen #1 press averaged 80 mw/cm2 on the side of
employees head for a 1 hour period which is 75 times the standard.
The #3 Thermotion press readings averaged 21 mw/cm2 which is 20 times
the standard. The corner thermation press averaged 26 mw/cm2 which
is 24 times the standard. These values are over the recommended
guidelines of the ACGIH 1988-1989 Radio-frequency/Microwave Radiation
Threshold Limit Values. Abatement should consist of shielding the
electrodes on the machines.
Feasible methods of abatement include, but are not limited to the
following:
1) Electrode shielding.
