Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to
the hazard of excessive airborne concentrations of enzyme dusts which
can cause occupational asthma, emphysema and sensitization reactions:
a) A tablet press operator was exposed to a calculated enzyme dust
concentration of 12.45 mg/m3 based on a total dust level of 40.68
mg/m3 and 31% composition Digesdyne. Air monitoring was conducted
for 468 minutes on 12/1/89.
b) A capsule press operator was exposed to a calculated enzyme dust
concentration of 0.88 mg/m3 based on a total dust level of 6.15
mg/m3 and 14% composition Mucozyme. Air monitoring was conducted
for 240 minutes on 12/1/89.
Methods of abatement include, but are not limited to:

exposures to enzyme dusts to 0.00006 mg/m3 or the lowest feasible
level to eliminate physical reactions.
-Establish a regulated area to limite exposure potential. Limit access
to persons trained and protected from the hazards of enzyme dusts.
-Make available a medical evaluation for any employee who has
developed signs and symptoms indicating possible overexposure to
enzyme dusts.
-Provide information and training on the physical and health hazards
of enzyme dusts; identify product formulations containing enzyme
dusts; and, describe measures to protect employees from exposure.
-Ensure labeling with appropriate hazard warning of all incoming
materials and in-house mixed powder batches containing enzyme
powders.
