Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) Employees working as pot tenders in the die cast dept. were not trained in the correct procedures for handling molten aluminum or instructed not to handle molten aluminum or place ladles into the pots and they were not trained in the proper protective equipment to use when working in the die cast dept. thereby exposing them to the hazard of burns. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is, but is not limited to: Provide instruction and training associated with the duties of a pot tender, relative to the exact methods to be used when handling molten aluminum, specific instructions not to handle the metal and the exact protective equipemnt needed before they are assigned to the duties of pot tender/trainee.
