Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to employees were exposed to explosion hazards:
(a)  On or about August 10, 1993, employees working at the furnace
and in the furnace
area at 1404 East Iron in Lyons, Kansas, were exposed to explosion
hazards when the
Brown-Boveri Corp., induction furnace exploded, throwing molten
metal out onto them.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct
this hazard is :
1)  Provide and implement written specific operating procedures for
the Brown-Boveri
Corp., induction furnace and its related components and;
2)  Develop and implement a safety program to train all furnace,
Mag.
Crane and ladle
operators in the safe operation of the Brown-Boveri Corp. furnace as
set forth in the
safety instruction section of the manufacturer's operating manual,
and;
3)  Ensure that all scrap metal, including charging blocks are
preheated prior to being
placed in the furnace.
