Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to being struck by:
a)  On or about January 12, 2000, employees were exposed to the hazard of
being struck by a
column being erected due to the lack of temporary bracing or other
securing means during the
erection process.
Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct
this hazard
include, but are not limited to:
Establishment of work practices which assure the stability of structures
through the use of
adequate temporary bracing or other securing means where needed.  Such
practices
would
include but not be limited to compliance with erection specifications and
codes such as the
following:
1.  AISC (American Institute of Steel Construction Inc.) Code of Standard
Practice, Article
504.10, "Erection".
a)  Temporary Bracing:  Allow for erection loads, and for sufficient
temporary bracing to
maintain structure safe, plumb, and in true alignment until completion of
erection and installation
of permanent bracing.
b)  Safety:  Contractor is totally responsible for erection procedures,
health and safety, and
shall comply with the requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.
