General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employer and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Mechanics were exposed to crushing injuries caused by defective automotive lifts at Humphrey's Amoco station, where they were required to work under and/or around faulty in-ground lifts: a. The in-ground automotive lift in Bay #1 did not have a proper- ly functioning safety catch, which is intended to prevent the lift from dropping completely should the hydraulics fail. b. One of the four (4) frame-engaging pads on the in-ground automotive lift in Bay #2 was broken off making the load unstable, potentially allowing the car to slip and fall. Feasible and effective abatement can be expected to include, but is not limited to: 1. Repair the broken safety latch on the lift in Bay #1. 2. Repair the frame-engaging pad on the lift in Bay #2. 3. Purchase new lifts. 4. The use of four (4) jack stands under vehicles on the lift in Bay #1. disclaimers: a. The employer is not limited to the abatement methods suggested OSHA. b. The methods explained are general and may not be effective on all cases. c. The employer is responsible for selecting and carrying out an appropriate abatement method.
