General-duty citation text

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which
were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause
death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were
exposed to:
....the hazard of 2nd and 3rd degree burns resulting from skin
contact with pressurized steam and/or hot water coming from a hose
used to clean engine block, cylinder heads, and other parts in the
machine shop, because the hose was not equipped with a constant
pressure switch.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct
this hazard is to replace the steam cleaning machine with a model
that is equipped with a constant pressure switch so that when the
operator released the hose the steam and/or hot water flow from the
nozzle would stop.
DiSCLAIMERS:
a) The employer is not limited to the abatement methods suggested
by OSHA.
b) The methods explained are general and may not be effective in
all cases.
c) The employer is responsible for selecting and carrying out an
effective abatement method.
