WERE FREE FROM RECOGNIZED HAZARDS THAT WERE CAUSING OR LIKELY TO CAUSE
DEATH OR SERIOUS PHYSICAL HARM TO EMPLOYEES IN THAT EMPLOYEES WERE
EXPOSED TO:
HAZARD OF EMPLOYEES BEING EXPOSED TO FALLS FROM LEADERS OR PLATFORM
WHILE ELEVATED ON SEMI-TRAILERS IN THAT UNEXPECTED LATERAL MOVEMENT
WOULD DISLODGE THE LADDER OR PLATFORM. ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE
ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO INSTITUTE A SYSTEM OF
WARNING ALARMS THAT MAY BE SUPLEMENTED WITH FLASHING LIGHTS OR SIMILAR
VISUAL WARNING IN ACCORDANCE WITH ANSI B20.1-1984, AMERICAN NATIONAL
STDS. INSTITUTE . THE WARNING DEVICES SHOULD BE ACTUATED BY THE
CONTROLLER FOR A REQUIRED PERIOD OF TIME BEFORE THE CONVEYOR STARTS,
ALLOWING EMPLOYEES SUFFICIENT TIME TO CLEAR THE AREA. EMPLOYEES
AFFECTED BY THIS PROCEDURE AND AUTHORIZED TO CONTROL THE ALARMS
(CONVEYOR) ARE TO BE TRAINED IN ITS USAGE AND AN ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM
IMPLEMENTED TO ASSURE ADHERENCE.
