Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) The increased likelihood of fires and/or explosions from the use of unapproved, shop made natural gas-fired area heating appliances constructed from 55-gallon drums located in the basement furnace and batch area hot end. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to install natural gas piping and heating appliances in accordance with the provisions stipulated in the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z233.1-1988 (NFPA 54-1988). Specific elements of abatement shall include, but not necessarily be limited to, the following: 1) Gas piping shall be designed, sized installed in inspected in accordance with parts 2-4 of the above referenced ANSI standard. 2) Heating appliances shall be installed, vented and operated in accordance with parts 5-8 of the above referenced ANSI standard.
