Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that the employees on the jobsite were in danger of being hit by crane suspended loads: JOBSITE: EMPLOYEES ON THE JOBSITE WERE IN DANGER OF BEING HIT BY A LOAD OF SCAFFOLD PLANKS THAT WERE BEING LOWERED WITH A CRANE FROM THE THIRTY-FIRST FLOOR TO THE GROUND. THE LOAD OF PLANKS WAS RIGGED WITH ONE (1) TEN FOOT AND ONE (1) TWELVE FOOT NYLON SLING. ABATEMENT METHODS: 1) USE SLINGS OF THE SAME LENGTH WHEN LIFTING THIS TYPE OF LOAD. 2) WHERE SLINGS ARE USED TO LIFT LONG LOADS, USE SPREADER BARS TO SPACE AND KEEP THE SLING LEGS IN PROPER BALANCE. 3) FIRMLY SECURE THE LOAD TOGETHER BEFORE LIFTING. 4) USE DOUBLE WRAP CHOKERS WHEN LIFTING THIS TYPE OF LOAD.
