Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The

employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to:
(a) On or about May 5, 1993, employees were using a Ford Stakebed Truck
(model 350) to install traffic  warning devices near the Interstate 55
and Illinois State highway 113 northbound entrance ramp. As the truck
was backing up and coming to a full stop, one of the employees fell while
he was stepping from the platform on the rear of the truck that did not
have adequate grab-bars nor handholds. Among other methods, one feasible
and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to install
designated grabbers and or handrails on the rear of the vehicle, and
establish and implement the following training program with written
procedures:
a.) Install designated grabbers and/or handrails on the rear of the
vehicle
in order to provide a safe mens of stepping down from the stepbumper.
b.) The company should provide specific training that addresses employee
practices of getting onto and off of company vehicles.
c.) Additionally, written procedures should be developed and included in
the company's safety and health program.
