Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to:
ANSI B-30.20 1985 Title: Below the Hook Lifting Devices. Section 20-
1.4.1 Operational Test. Prior to initial use, all new, altered,
modified, or repaired lifting devices were not tested to ensure
compliance with this standard;
a) There were not operational tests performed to determine the rated
load capacity on a total of 83 "j" type hooks used in supporting
(1300 cc) motorcycle engines, each weighing approximately 137 lbs.,
which is part of the upper assembly conveyor system. This condition
exposed employees in the area to potential crush hazards resulting
from structural failure and/or misuse.
b) There were no operational tests performed to determine the rated load
capacity on a total of 44 engine hooks in open booth #7 area while
lifting (1300 cc) motorcycle engines, each weighing approximately
137 lbs, which is part of the inspection testing conveyor system.
This condition exposed employees in the area to potential crush
hazards resulting from structural failure and/or misuse.
