General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employee(s) were exposed to the hazard being caught by a rotating band saw blade. Building K, saw area, on/or about August 9, 1993, employee(s) were exposed to the hazard(s); of a rotating band saw blade, being struck by a shattered saw blade, being struck by falling stock, and pinch points while handling a 24 inch piece of round stock. The stock had been placed in a Marvel vertical band saw that had an 18 inch capacity. Vises supplied bythe manufacturer to hold stock that was being cut were removed from the saw to accommodate the larger piece of stock allowing the blade to bind in the stock. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard would be to: (1) follow the manufascturer's recommendations that are provided in the Marvel Saw owner's manual; (2) provide training in safe use practices of the Marvel vertical saw to all management, salaried and hourly employees that are involved in the use of the Marvel vertical band saw and ensure the safe use practices are followed by
