SECTION 5(A)(1) OF THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ACT OF 1970: THE %% EMPLOYER DID NOT FURNISH EMPLOYMENT AND A PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT WHICH WERE FREE FROM RECOGNIZED HAZARDS THAT WERE CAUSING OR LIKELY TO CAUSE DEATH OR SERIOUS PHYSICAL HARM TO EMPLOYEES IN THE EMPLOYEES WERE EXPOSED TO: A) EMPLOYEES WERE EXPOSED TO THE HAZARD OF EXPLODING/FLYING MOLTEN ZINC DURING CUSTOM DIP GALVANIZING OPERATIONS WHEN THE METAL PARTS (TO BE GALVANIZED) WERE DIPPED INTO MOLTEN ZINC (TEMPERATURE OF 1000 DEGREES F) WHEN THEY ARE STILL WET WITH FLUX (AQUEOUS ZINC/AMMONIUM CHLORIDE SOLUTION). THIS HAZARD EXISTS IN: A) THE SMALL KETTLE AREA AND B) THE LARGE KETTLE AREA AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: ESTABLISH A PROGRAM TO ENSURE THAT PARTS ARE DRY BEFORE THEY ARE LOWERED INTO THE MOLTEN ZINC INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING: A) USE DRYERS TO HEAT/DRY PARTS AFTER THE FLUX PROCESS. B) ASSIGN AND TRAIN AN EMPLOYEE TO INSPECT PARTS TO INSURE THAT THEY ARE DRY BEFORE BEING DIPPED INTO THE MOLTEN ZINC. C) FURTHER PROTECT EMPLOYEES AGAINST INADVERTENT SPLASHING THROUGH THE USE OF LOCATION, BARRIERS, AND SUFFICIENT PERSON PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT.
