Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to:
On or before 12/23/94, employees working at or near furnaces were exposed
to serious injury
due to the possibility of a molten metal explosion.  Inadequate procedures
were in place to
prevent the liklihood of foreign material, e.g., sealed drums/tanks,
entering the furnace.  An
employee was instructed to charge the furnace using scrap from a load
known to contain such
foreign materials.  At the same time, another employee was instructed to
remove the foreign
materials.
Abatement may include the following:
(1)  Insure that scrap loads containing unacceptable material such as
sealed
drums/tanks be
rejected at the point of receipt.
(2)  Insure that when scrap loads are discovered to contain such foreign
material during the
inspection process after receipt, that such scrap be segregated from other
scrap and be
unavailable to the production department until foreign materials are
removed.
