Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to:  The hazard of exposure to electrical shock or
electrocution from wiring
which does not meet the requirements of the National Electrical Code
(NEC). In that:
1. Attachment plugs and connectors for the heat lamps in the farrowing
area were of not
dead-front construction.(NEC 410-56 f!)
2. Exposed noncurrent-carrying metal parts of fixed equipment (wall
mounted gas heaters
in the passageway between the farrowing units) were not grounded. (NEC
250-42,-43)
3. Flexible cords were being used to connect a space heater to a ceiling
outlet (as a
substitute for fixed wiring) in the gilthouse area. (NEC 400-8)
AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT
METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS ....
1. Inspect all heating lamps to ensure they meet the requirements of the
National Electrical Code
that all 15 and 20 ampere attachment plugs and connections be dead-end
front construction.
2. Exposed noncurrent-carrying metal parts of fixed equipment should be
tested to make sure
they are properly grounded.
3. Install permanent wiring for the heater.
