Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: Workers (EMTS) transporting patients and/or responding to medical emergencies are exposed to the hazard of being infected with tuberculosis (TB) through exposure to exhaled air of persons with known or suspect cases of TB: (a)Periodic employee medical evaluations and PPD tuberculin skin testing were not offered at appropriate frequency to all employees exposed to individuals with known or suspect TB. Feasible abatement methods for reducing this hazard include, but are not limited to the following: (1)Provide medical surveillance for workers which includes initial and periodic evaluations which offer initial baseline screening, annual PPD tuberculin skin testing, and PPD tuberculin skin testing every 6 months for employees with exposure to individuals with known or suspect TB. (2)Evaluation and management of employees with a positive skin test, a skin test conversion on repeat testing, who exhibit symptoms of TB, or who experience a TB exposure incident. (3)Initial and annual training and informing of employees to ensure knowledge of the hazard of TB transmission, its signs and symptoms, medical surveillance and therapy, and site-specific protocols including the purpose and proper use of controls to prevent exposure.
