Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employee(s) such as shipfitters were exposed to the hazard of being crushed between the crane trucks (wheels) and the guardrail on the wingwall of the floating drydock, or being struck by the crane itself: (a)On or about 3/4/96, an employee was crushed between the crane trucks/wheels and the wingwall guardrail as he and another worker repaired the steps of the gangway in nearby proximity where a rail-mounted wingwall crane was operating. Among others, several feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard are: 1. Schedule cane work at times when there is no exposure to employees being struck by the operation of crane; or 2. Coordinate crane travel with employees working in the area to eliminate exposure to being struck by the crane.
