General-duty citation text
The alleged violations below (5a-5b, 10a-10c, 11a-11b, 12a-12b, 13a-13c, 14a-14b and 15a-15b) have been grouped because they involve similar or related hazards that may increase the potential for injury resulting from an accident. Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: the employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a potential explosion hazard due to improper storage of incompatible chemicals of an organic peroxide and acetone. These products were observed on or about 6/7/91 being stored adjacent to each other in the production area and outside storage shed. Employees exposed to the risk of chemical burns and/or smoke inhalation in that separate storage areas or a substitution of chemicals had not been established. Among other methods, two feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this are: (a) Providing separate storage areas for the organic peroxide and acetone; or (b) Substituting the acetone with a more compatible solvent such as ethyl acetate or methyl ketone. Consi- deration of these substitutes must take into account their lower permissible exposure limits as apposed to acetones.
